To become a DuPage County sheriff’s deputy, applicants must be at least 21 and have two or more years of college credit.

But those qualifications apparently don’t matter, provided you’re a son of the western suburbs’ top law enforcement official.

A Better Government Association/CBS2 investigation found that Patrick Zaruba, the teenage son of DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba, was allowed to go on numerous patrols with on-duty sheriff’s officers in recent years, dress like a cop, and participate in car and foot chases and, possibly, arrests.

Not only was the sheriff aware of his son’s activities, the sheriff was present on occasion, including an instance where the Zarubas stood side by side as the sheriff tried to enter a home to look for a suspect, a source told the BGA. Patrick Zaruba was 18 at the time, and a senior at Wheaton Warrenville South High School.

Many police agencies have "ride-along" programs – in which members of the media, aspiring cops and other interested parties can tag along with on-duty officers to get a feel for real-life law enforcement.

But experts consulted by the BGA were stunned that the sheriff allowed a youthful observer to have a hand in actual police work. Not only does that create huge insurance and departmental liability concerns – what if the ride-along participant slipped and broke a bone, or injured a suspect? – it has the potential to put officers in jeopardy and ultimately poison a prosecution, they said.

One Cop Fired, Other Gets Small Vacation in Death Of Black Man.

Two of seven North Chicago police officers suspected to have been involved in the beating death of Darrin Hanna faced disciplinary action Friday, while their other colleagues returned to their previous posts.

Officer Brandon Yost, a six-year veteran of the force was to be discharged immediately from his position, while Arthur Strong, a seven-year veteran, will be suspended for 30 years without pay, North Chicago Police Chief James Jackson announced Friday, NBC Chicago reports.

As Jackson announced his decision, a crowd of onlookers yelled "cover up" and "liar," NBC reports.

According to ABC Chicago, Yost had admitted to hitting Hanna, while Strong falsified police reports on the incident. The other four officers and one supervisor involved in Hanna's November 2011 arrest had been put on temporary paid leave but, as of Friday, were given the go-ahead to return to work.

On Nov. 6, police responded to a report of domestic battery and detained 45-year-old Hanna, who had been accused of striking his pregnant girlfriend and attempting to drown her in a bathtub. Hanna struggled with police, sustaining injuries consistent with blunt force trauma and multiple discharges of a stun gun, and died several days later.

Hanna's death was officially attributed to several factors, including physical trauma and restraint and cocaine use that exacerbated his existing sickle cell anemia, but Hanna's family believed police officers involved should be held responsible.

Students Wanting Better Education Starts Their Own School

Students suspended for walking out of class at Detroit's Western International High School earlier this week to protest school closures and demand a better education, are holding a "freedom school" Friday in Clark Park, across the street from their official school building.

Students left class Wednesday morning toprotest the closing of Southwestern High School, which many fear would lead to overcrowding at Western, and to demand more resources and greater teacher engagement for the district's schools.

Southwestern's nearly 600 students will be offered space at Western International and Northwestern high schools next year, according to the district.

Detroit Board of Education member Elena Herrada told the Detroit News that up to 180 students were suspended from Western and Southwestern high schools following Wednesday's action. Detroit Public Schools spokesman Steven Wasko told The Huffington Post about 100 students were suspended for five days following the walkout.

School officials at Western did not return repeated requests for comment.

Wasko said concerns about a potential lack of supplies at Western are unfounded. "Western was one of the schools with top scholarships awards, coming in after Renaissance and Cass" high schools for the 2010-11 school year, securing more than $13.9 million in grants and scholarships.

One Western student told The Huffington Post she could be facing more than a suspension. Raychel Gafford, 17, said she has been singled out by school authorities for her vocal role in the walkout and that the district's police have indicated she may face unspecified charges.

Gafford said students are organizing the freedom school for the same reasons they walked out. "We're sticking together and we're not backing down from this," she said. "We were thrown out of school for fighting for an equal education and we're doing this to show we're still going to be learning even if we got kicked out of school."

Man Ran Over By Police, Family Wants Justice

The family of a Brooklyn man struck and killed by a police car earlier this month will join Reverend Al Sharpton in calling for an investigation into the fatal incident.

Tamon Robinson, 27, was allegedly spotted by police at 5:30 AM on April 12th stealing cobblestones from the Bay View Houses, apublic housing complex in Canarsie.

When he saw police, Robinson bolted for his mother's building, which The New York Times reports was just a short 100 yards away. Two officers were chasing him on foot and another set were chasing him by car.

As Robinson neared the building, the cop car veered up onto the sidewalk.

"They hit him,” said 26-year-old Franchette Mowbray, who witnessed the episode, told The Times. “He flew up and he came down. They backed the car up, and they told him to get up. People were yelling out their windows screaming at the cops, ‘We saw what you did.’ ”

The official police account of the day's events differs from witnesses, however. Police say the car was stopped when Robinson ran into it. Friends of Robinson also say thathe had permission to take the cobblestones, as he had a business on the side selling such materials.

Robinson--a popular barista at a Brooklyn Connecticut Muffin --suffered a head injury was taken to the hospital where he was handcuffed to his bed, even after falling into a coma.

After his six days, he was declared brain dead and his family elected to take him off the respirator. He died on April 18th.

Mom Stabs 8- Month Old Baby Cause His Couldn't Have Her.

A 29-year old mother, Kenisha Thomas, was somehow disturbed during a supervised visit by asocial services worker. The mother did not have custody of the child and felt that the state was not doing a good enough job of taking care of her.

The Baltimore woman was so upset that she ended up doing the unthinkable: Stabbing her 8 month old daughter multiple times with a large kitchen knife.
“I’m going to kill her.”

When the social services worker told her that the visit was going to be over soon, the mother said:
According to the workers and witnesses, that’s when the mother pulled the kitchen knife from her bag and began to stab the child. The worker screamed and ran out of the room as a male worker threw chairs at Thomas until she stopped stabbing the baby.

Witnesses say that Thomas was overheard saying:

“It is about to be over.”

Unbelievably, the baby survived and is in Johns Hopkins Hospital with stab wounds to the face and neck. The knife was reportedly stuck in the baby’s neck when paramedics arrived.

Woman Steals From The Wrong Bus Driver

A bus driver in Columbus, Ohio, may get busted after brawling with a passenger accused of stealing her wallet.

The incident happened last week when the bus driver, whose name has not been released, stopped the bus and got off for a bathroom break during her normal route,according to RightThisMinute.

"She [told] the one woman on the bus, 'I'm going to run to the restroom,'" said RightThisMinute correspondent Gayle Bass. "That's when the bus driver says the woman reached in and grabbed the wallet."

Surveillance video obtained by WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio, shows a woman with ababy stroller, later identified as Kyosha Moore, reaching behind the driver's seat.

Another surveillance video taken at a Kroger grocery store shows the bus driver walking in and confronting Moore. Then, the two get into a physical fight that leaves them rolling on the ground.

"Police said the wallet was found on the suspect," Bass said.

That's the good news for the bus driver. The bad news is that her methods of retrieval are getting her in hot water with officials at the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA).

COTA spokeswoman Beth Berkemer told WBNS-TV that she would not go into detail about what COTA thought happened on the bus, but did say that the driver was under investigation.

"At this point in time, we're investigating all angles to see what happened," Berkemer said. "There is the possibility that our operator behaved in an unprofessional manner towards a customer, and that's not something we will accept, if that's how the situation occurred."

Meanwhile, Moore, who is currently being held in jail on bond, faces charges of felony theft and, according to local police, is also wanted outside of Hamilton County for violation of her parole on a forgery charge.

Fight In The Mall Of America Over Return Toys.

Eight adults and 11 minors face a variety of charges including rioting and disorderly conduct for several fights that turned the Mall of America into a chaotic scene on the day after Christmas.

It took dozens of police officers and mall security guards several hours to break up the scattered fights and restore order to the huge shopping and entertainment complex in Bloomington, Minn.

Initially, 12 people were busted on allegations they were involved in the melee in the food court and other sections of the mall. But prosecutors in Bloomington and in Hennepin County announced charges against additional suspects after combing through surveillance footage, Internet clips and cellphone video, according to theLeader-Telegram.

The charges include rioting, disorderly conduct, trespassing and marijuana possession,the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.

Video of the brawl was widely circulated after the Dec. 26 melee and mall officialsvowed to increase security in the aftermath, KARE reported.

No one was seriously injured in the fracas, according to reports, but brawlers punched, kicked and threw objects at each other.

Prostitute Steals $500,000 worth Of Jewels From John.

The New York City Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in finding a prostitute who they say stole over $500,000 worth of precious jewels from her John’s hotel room.

Gem trader Kurt Kaiser, 47, said he met Erika Cooper, 34, innocently enough at the end of a rough day at the Whiskey Bar on Central Park South on April 17.

The two ended up back at his hotel, where they had sex and he passed out, allowing her to slip out with his stash of diamonds.

Kaiser met Cooper late Tuesday night, where he was drinking heavily after he lost out on a deal to sell his stones, according to the New York Post.

Cooper zeroed in on her mark, chatting up a drunk Kaiser and then proposing the two go to the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Tribeca to get a room.

‘I was sitting by myself having a last vodka and soda, and she came up and asked, ‘Mind if I join you?’ I said: ‘Hell, yeah!’ he told the Post.

Kaiser told the paper that before they got to the room, they stopped at a CVS store where she used his credit card to purchase a $500 gift card and a box of condoms.

Then they went off to the Cosmopolitan, where they sealed the deal and had sex. Unfortunately for Kaiser, he fell asleep first.

‘It’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever done in my life,’ he said.

Police want Cooper for grand larceny, but say they will not charge Kaiser for soliciting a prostitute.

An NYPD spokesperson told the Mail Online that they had no idea about the $500 payoff.

‘The victim never told us that,’ the spokesperson said, likening the gift card purchase to a man buying dinner for a date.

Police added that Cooper, a Manhattan resident, also goes by the name of ‘Bianca Williams.’

She’s approximately 5’9″, weighs 120 lbs.,and has brown eyes and black hair.

Kaiser is offering a reward for his missing jewels.

‘If she gives them back, I probably won’t press charges,’ he said. ‘She can have someone drop them off at the 1st Precinct.’

Former Bengals, Nate Webster Could Get 20 Years On Sex Crimes.

CINCINNATI — Former Bengals linebacker Nate Webster was convicted Wednesday of sex-related charges involving the teenage daughter of a former assistant coach for the Cincinnati team.

A jury in Cincinnati found Webster, 34, guilty of four counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Jurors found him not guilty of three other charges: gross sexual imposition, sexual battery and a fifth count of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The jury deliberated for about six hours before reaching the verdict.

Prosecutors say Webster had sexual contact with the girl in 2009 when she was 15 and threatened to harm her if she told anyone. Webster admits having sex with the girl the next year, when she was 16, the legal age of consent in Ohio, but denies that the sexual relations began earlier than that.

Webster was taken into custody after the verdict.

"We obviously are disappointed with the verdict in some respects," Webster's attorney, Gregory Samms said after court. He said they plan to file an appeal after sentencing, but said he could not comment on specific issues being considered for the appeal.

Samms said that the girl lied when she said she was 15 at the time she and Webster began having sex. Prosecutors said Webster told police that he had sex with the girl when she was 15 and played tapes of those interviews in court, but Samms said Webster was mistaken about the dates in his earlier statements.

Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Seth Tieger declined to comment on the verdict or other aspects of the case prior to sentencing, scheduled for June 6.

The prosecutor's office said Webster could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. Webster could have faced up to 36 1/2 years in prison if he had been convicted on all counts.

The former Bengals player turned down a proposed plea deal prior to the trial that would have required him to serve four years in prison, a prosecutor's spokesman said.

How Can You Work For A Black Magazine And Be A Racist?

Michael Bullerdick has resigned from his post as Managing Editor at Essence magazine and has “accepted a position in another division," reports MediaBistro.com.

The abrupt resignation comes in the wake of Bullerdick's right-wing and racist Facebook comments being exposed to the publication.

Although Bullerdick's Facebook page is private, a reader or presumably a "friend" took screen shots of his page, which was riddled with racist content and sent them to the website Journal-isms.

According to NewsOne.com, on one page Bullerdick calls civil rights leader Al Sharpton as a “Race Pimp”; goes after President Barack Obama as a radical; touts videos by the late Andrew Breitbart, who was responsible for getting former USDA official Shirley Sherrod fired; and attacks Attorney General Eric Holder.

The screen shots containing these extreme views were then emailed to Essence on Friday by Journal-isms with the following message:

"Essence readers would be shocked to find that Bullerdick, who under the prodding of Time Inc became the first white male editor at the magazine last year, openly espouses extremist Right-wing views that run counter to what Essence has historically stood for."

In response, Constance P. White, Essence's editor-in-chief released the following statement:
"As editor-in-chief, I’m responsible for all editorial content for Essence. I hired Michael to manage the production schedule of Essence. As head of production, he does not attend editorial idea meetings, nor does he get involved in the editorial direction of the magazine."

Whether that's true or not, Bullerdick's comments clearly struck a no-nonsense cord and shortly after White's statement an Essence spokesperson confirmed that “by mutual agreement, Michael has accepted a position in another division.”

We assume this division is completely detached from the Essence brand and lies somewhere else within the Time, Inc.'s deep portfolio, however no details have been released.

This isn't the first time Essence has had to fight a racial firestorm. It's been almost two years now that Ellianna Placas, the black publication's first white fashion director was hired. Despite the initial outrage that a black person was not offered the job, Placas still holds the position.

The current uproar surrounding Bullerdick's resignation might shine the singeing spotlight back onto Placas.

Don Cornelius Kills Himself To Save Family From Pain.

Since Cornelius suffered an aneurysm in 1997, seizures plagued him in later years. In the final six months of his life, though, the pain of his condition had become debilitating, causing Cornelius to fall in to a deep depression.
From the autopsy report, it is stated that Cornelius called his son at 3 a.m., saying, “I don’t know how long I can take this.” TMZ reports:

Don’s son told him he’d rush right over … and Don said he’d leave the back door open. When Don’s son arrived to Cornelius’ Los Angeles home, he detected an odor of smoke and saw Don seated in a chair with a pistol in his right hand.

The autopsy report also reveals that Cornelius pulled the trigger from his left temple and the bullet exited his right temple. Oddly enough, there were also paper bags over his hands:

The decedent was 75-year-old Black male. He was observed supine on a hospital bed in the emergency room. He was covered with a white sheet. He was clad in black pants, black underwear, and a white hospital gown. No tattoos were noted. … His hands were covered with brown paper bags. … I found what appears to be a bullet entrance contact wound to the right temple. I saw what appears to be an exit wound to the upper left side of his head. No other trauma was noted.

Man Beaten In Justice For Trayvon.

Alabama police are trying to track down a mob that beat a man into critical condition -- leaving their battered victim with the words, "Now that's justice for Trayvon."

Cops told WKRG that Matthew Owens got in an argument with some kids playing basketball at a court in the city of Mobile on Saturday night. The kids left and a group of some 20 adults arrived at Owens' front doorstep, armed with chairs, brass knuckles, pipes and paint cans.

The group, all African American, allegedly beat him into a bloody pulp before someone uttered the words that connected the crime to the death of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teen who was shot and killed in Florida by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman.

"It was the scariest thing I have ever witnessed," Owens' sister, Ashley Parker, told the station. She said the perps utilized "anything they could get their hands on" as weapons.

Cops searched the area, but couldn't find any suspects.

The February death of Martin has received international attention after Zimmerman killed the 17-year-old boy in what he said was self defense. A failure to immediately charge Zimmerman in the case caused public outcry as well as nationwide debates about gun law and race. Earlier this month, he was charged with second-degree murder.
