Why Are So Many Black Males Die In The Streets Of Chicago?

Homicides in Chicago spiked by 60 percent during the first three months of the year despite an increase in police resources in some of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods, according to new police crime statistics.

The Chicago Police Department data showed that nonfatal shootings also rose sharply in the first quarter compared with the same three months in 2011.

Chicago police and Mayor Rahm Emanuel say the city has increased efforts to combat gang crime, including adding officers and other resources in trouble spots such as the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. Police blame much of the violence on the city's more than 70 active gangs and their tens of thousands of members. The mayor has urged residents to take a stand against gangs in their communities.

The police statistics show 120 homicides from Jan. 1 through April 1, compared with 75 over the same period in 2011.

One criminologist said unseasonably warm weather might have contributed to the spike.

"In better weather, people are outside more, interacting more with neighbors, acquaintances, even strangers, and there's greater opportunity for conflict than when it's cold and windy," James Alan Fox told the Chicago Tribune.

Fox, a professor of criminology, law and public policy at Northeastern University in Boston, cautioned that it's too early to draw hard conclusions from three months of data, noting that the number of homicides in Chicago has been at historic lows in recent years.

All six other crime categories tracked in the police statistics were down, including a 15 percent decline in sexual assaults and a 9 percent drop in robberies. Car thefts declined 16 percent to 4,081.

No More Hanging Niggas, Just Shot Them.

Some 200 protesters angered by a Chicago police officer's fatal shooting of a 22-year-old woman last week rallied Tuesday outside the officer's home, calling for justice for a woman police admit was an innocent bystander.

Rekia Boyd was fatally shot in the city's Lawndale neighborhood early last Wednesday. The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. near the intersection of 15th Place and Albany Avenue as an off-duty Chicago detective stopped to look into a "disturbance" that reportedly involved a group of people gathering near Douglas Park.

According to police, after the detective stopped and announced his office, a man -- Antonio Cross, 39 -- allegedly advanced toward his car with a gun in hand. The officer opened fire from his car, striking Cross in the hand and Boyd, who was standing nearby, in the head.

Boyd was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition and died Thursday. Cross was charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault as no weapon was recovered from the scene of the incident.

Chicago Police Proves There's No Justice, Just Us.

A woman shot by an off-duty Chicago police officer on Wednesday morning died Thursday. Family members say she was an innocent bystander and are calling for an investigation into her death.

“How could this be justified? They took my sister away from me,” said Martinez Sutton, the brother of 22-year-old Rekia Boyd.

The suburban man is grieving the loss of his sister, who died Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital after being shot in the head by an off-duty Chicago police officer.

Boyd and a man were both shot early Wednesday morning by an off-duty detective on the city’s West Side.

Black Children Grow Up And Die In American War Zones

A 6-year-old girl was fatally shot Saturday afternoon -- one of five individuals wounded within one hour in separate shootings across the city and one of at least seven killed by gun violence over the weekend as of Sunday morning -- in Chicago.

Aliyah Shell was playing on her front porch with her parents around 3:40 p.m. in the 3100 block of South Springfield Avenue in the city's Little Village neighborhood when a pickup truck pulled up to the house and a man inside the vehicle began shooting at the house, NBC Chicago reports.

The girl was struck in the abdomen multiple times and was rushed in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:24 p.m., according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

A neighbor told the Chicago Tribune that she would remember Aliyah as a "really sweet" girl.
"Every time she's come over, she'd eat the bananas," the girl recalled to the Tribune. "She was a good girl. It wasn't her fault."

Teen Eats More Then Lunch At Chicago School.

A 17-year-old Chicago girl has been charged with biting a Chicago police officer who intervened Thursday in a cafeteria fight at an East Garfield Park school.

Danielle McClinton, of the 5000 block of West Erie Street, allegedly instigated the brawl, which also led to the arrest of three other female students, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The fight reportedly began at 12:30 p.m. when several Al Raby School for Community and Environment students started fighting, causing the police officer assigned to cover the school to intervene. In the midst of the fight, McClinton allegedly bit the officer's right hand three times, according to the Tribune.

Interracial Dating Leads To 1960 Hate Crime.

Three white Chicago teenagers have been arrested after they beat and placed a noose around the neck of a black teenager, the Chicago Tribune reports. Their apparent motivation was his relationship with a white girl who is the cousin of one of the attackers.

In the attack, which occurred on Dec. 23 in the home of one of the attackers, the teenagers pulled out rope, wrapped it around the black teenager's neck and yelled racial epithets at him as they beat him. One of the attackers also pulled a knife on the victim. The victim escaped and informed his family and authorities.

The teenagers, ages 16, 17 and 18, were booked and charged with hate crimes on Jan. 10. The victim, 17, and the attackers all went to Brother Rice High School, which is also investigating the incident.

Excessive force to cost Chicago a cool million

The family of an autistic teen who they say was beaten by police could receive a $525,000 settlement, as recommended by a City Council committee Tuesday.

Oscar Guzman was 16 on April 22, 2009 when two police officers approached him outside is family's Little Village restaurant, where he was watching pigeons, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Guzman reportedly ran into the restaurant when officers approached him, and they followed. A struggle ensued, reportedly after Oscar's parents say they explained he had special needs, and after Oscar identified himself as "a special boy." Guzman was struck in the head with a retractable baton, causing four-centimeter laceration that had to be closed with staples at a nearby hospital.

The two police officers involved also allegedly threatened to arrest Guzman's sister, Nubia, then a college student, with arrest after she questioned the officers' actions, according to the Sun-Times.
The officers involved said Guzman reached towards his waistband before entering the restaurant, suggesting he might have had a weapon, according to the Chicago Tribune. They claim Guzman was struck "inadvertently" when the 16-year-old pushed the officer wielding the baton in the chest.

The City Council's Finance Committee recommended the $525,000 settlement in response to a lawsuit brought on Guzman's behalf, Fox Chicago reports. The settlement will face a full council vote Wednesday.
Aldermen Ed Burke, 14th, and Ray Suarez, 13th, have been vocal advocates for Guzman's case.
"I support the police department 175 percent, but I don't like abuse. This is a clear, clear, clear case of abuse," said Suarez, who suggested the payment was insufficient, according to the Tribune.
