Slavery In America, The Need For Money Has Us All.

LeRoy Smith thought he had hit rock bottom when he found himself trolling Atlanta's gay district, looking to exchange sex acts for a hot hit off a crack pipe. Then he wound up on a Florida farm near the small town of Hastings, being bilked blind, he says, by a man with a fifth-grade education, sweating all day for a few dirty dollars, with no way to escape from the middle-of-nowhere camp.
He did not think slavery existed in modern America. He knows better now.
The recruiters had found LeRoy Smith playing chess in a park in Jacksonville on May 1, 2010. They pegged him for a black man with a back strong enough for farm work and an addiction strong enough to stick around and work for nothing. He was hooked on crack, but he had enough sense to recognize peonage when he saw it, and to slip away by night to safety.
And now he's talking. He filed a lawsuit last month in federal court against the man he says enslaved him. And he's talking to the Tampa Bay Times in hopes that publicity will cleanse Florida of indentured servitude.
The man he accuses says it's all a lie. Confronted with the allegations, Ronald Uzzle dismissed them and told a reporter to get off his property.
There's something going on in this small town and it might be hard to care because the victims are often homeless black men who live mostly in the shadows. Many have criminal records and sins in their past.
But many served in the armed forces and lived good lives before they dropped out of society and wound up in bondage.
Authorities have failed to stop a form of slavery that begins with indebtedness and sometimes doesn't end until a worker is dead.
And it continues today.

Florida's Stand Your Ground Law Only Protect Whites Who Pull The Trigger.

Marissa Alexander, the Florida mother of three facing 20 years in prison for firing what her family said was a warning shot at her abusive husband, is anything but a victim, said the state prosecutor who oversaw the case.
“She was angry” when she fired the shot, State Attorney Angela B. Corey told HuffPost. “She was not in fear.”
Alexander, 31, scheduled to be sentenced on Friday, was convicted by the same state attorney's office prosecuting the killing of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teenager shot to death in February by a neighborhood watch volunteer. Both cases have stirred controversy surrounding Florida's Stand Your Ground gun law, which allows citizens wide discretion in using deadly force to defend themselves. Alexander invoked the law in her unsuccessful defense to aggravated assault charges filed against her in August 2010. Neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman is using it against the second-degree murder charge he faces in Martin's death.
Alexander’s family and a growing legion of her supporters have decried her prosecution by Corey’s office, saying that Alexander is an example of someone standing her ground. Her husband, Rico Gray, 36, admitted in court documents to beating, choking and punching women, including Alexander. "I got five baby-mamas and I put my hands on every last one of them except for one," Gray said in a deposition.
The couple's battle in 2010 left Alexander cornered in the couple’s Jacksonville home. She ran into the garage to escape and was trapped behind a jammed door, she said in court documents. She said she grabbed the gun she kept in the garage, returned to the house and, when Gray threatened to kill her, fired a single shot to ward him off.
Gray fled the home with his two sons and called the police. Alexander was arrested and eventually convicted of three counts of aggravated assault. A judge last weekrejected her appeal for a new trial. She faces sentencing under a Florida law that imposes a mandatory minimum 20-year prison term for certain gun crimes.

Corey said her office considered all the details of the case before moving forward with Alexander’s prosecution. She said the facts don’t support Alexander’s self-defense claim. Just before Alexander went into the garage and retrieved her pistol, she told Gray, “I got something for your ass,” Corey said.

Taco Bell Employee Force To Work For Tacos

Taco Bell loves it when you eat round the clock. But they don't seem to want to pay their workers for every one of the hours they spend feeding you.
A former shift manager at Taco Bell is bringing a class-action suit against the restaurant chain, claiming that employees are regularly forced to work overtime hours without pay, according to a report at Law360.
Plaintiff Alicia Sloan, who was a shift manager at Taco Bell for eight years, says that Taco Bell managers in Florida often shave hours from employees' time cards, meaning workers don't get paid for all of the hours they work. Sloan also says the managers themselves are sometimes forced to take on unpaid hours, according to Law360.
Taco Bell's not unique in allegedly not paying workers for overtime. In recent years, more companies have faced lawsuits from workers claiming they haven't gotten their fair share of overtime pay. These kinds of suits have continued to climb even in the wake of the Great Recession -- an economic crisis that allowed many employers to demand higher performance from their desperate workers, while not paying them much more than before.
Nor is this the first time Taco Bell has faced these kinds of accusations. In fact, the scenario sounds like an old controversy that's been reheated.

Christian Conservatives Plan To Pray To A Black Jesus To Remove A Black President.

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Hundreds of Christian conservatives convened here Friday for The Awakening, a two-day combination of strategy session, prayer meeting and Tea Party reunion aimed at jump-starting a religious revival they say will defeat the "secular, socialist" White House incumbent, Barack Obama.

Even if that means electing "the lesser of two evils," as many here referred to Mitt Romney. That's how Angelica Garnica, 33, of Orlando, described the choice in November. Wearing a "Change It Back 2012" T-shirt, the publishing company manager said Romney is "the only option we have," even if he "is not as conservative as we would like."

Friday's gathering opened in the cavernous sanctuary of Calvary Assembly, a mega-church in suburban Orlando that looks more like a convention center than a house of worship. It included fiery preaching, the lifting of hands in worship and a chorus of "amens" with a heavy Spanish accent showing conservatives' concern at losing their huge and important voting bloc in this year's election. A large, orange cross was lighted on the stage as people rose and sang hallelujah with arms raised and eyes closed.

Though billed as a "federation of multi-racial, multi-ethnic and multi-generational faith-based and policy organizations," the crowd was mostly white. Still, here in Florida, a battleground state where more than one in five are Hispanic, the focus on opening night was on a key demographic that polls show leans strongly toward Obama. A panel of Hispanic pastors talked about the need to unite Christian minorities and whites on the basis of shared conservative values that include opposing abortion and gay marriage and showing compassion to immigrants.

The meat of The Awakening comes Saturday in breakout sessions on hot-button political issues. Among them: "winning the battle and messaging the masses" against gay rights, "families under attack" from pornography and sexual promiscuity, and panel discussions on abortion, immigration, Israel and women.

And there will be political hands-on sessions titled, "Pastors, Churches and Political Activity: Re-energizing the Pulpit" and "Utilizing C3s, C4s and PAC," references to the IRS codes that define social and political fundraising groups.

Scheduled speakers include Republican Florida congressmen Allen West and Jon Mica. Also scheduled are Lou Engle, the controversial Kansas City evangelical leader of The Call Ministries who has praised Uganda for "courage" in pushing the death penalty for gays who have AIDS or engage in homosexual sex, as well as Frank Gaffney, the neo-conservative defense analyst whose Center for Security Policy is bankrolled by Israel settlement supporter Irving Moskowitz. Gaffney in 2008 said Obama sought "the Jihadist vote."

Not showing up in person, despite weeks of being advertised: Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich and ex-candidate Herman Cain. Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, whose appearance was heavily promoted, appeared from Washington by video. Rubio said earlier this week he has no interest in being Romney's running mate.

The Legal System At It's Best, Protecting One Of It's White Own.

A Florida judge has granted bail for George Zimmerman, the Florida neighborhood watch captain accused of second-degree murder in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester set Zimmerman's bond at $150,000, but said he would not be released today, pending deliberations about the terms of the release.

The bail hearing featured dramatic testimony from Zimmerman, who took the stand and offered an apology to Martin's parents.

"I wanted to say that I am sorry for the loss of your son," Zimmerman said, adding that he did not know how old Martin was or that he was unarmed.

"I thought he was a little bit younger than I am," he said. "I did not know whether he was armed or not."

Assistant prosecutor Bernie De La Rionda requested that the judge set no bail or require a bond of $1 million, arguing that Zimmerman's past history of violence and the evidence against him in the shooting of Martin made him a threat to the public.

Father Kills Son For Making Him Lose A Game On His Xbox.

A Florida man is accused of killing his newborn son because the child would not stop crying while he played videogames.

Jacob David Hartley, 20, admitted to authorities that he shook the 3-week-old boy last Thursday afternoon before going to work, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said in a statement to The Huffington Post.

Hartley admitted to police that he used both hands to throttle Colton D. Hartley who cried during his dad's Xbox session. The baby's alleged injuries were only discovered hours later by his mother Amber Newton.

Police said that Hartley returned to his Lakeland home after stocking shelves at Sam's Club and played video games until approximately 4:00 a.m. on Friday. That's when the infant woke up crying. Newton prepared a bottle while Hartley held his son, according to news reports.

Hartley allegedly fell asleep holding the infant on his chest. About two hours later, Newton discovered her son "unresponsive and bleeding from his nose and mouth," according to police.

"The infant was transported to Bartow Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased," according to the sheriff's office statement.

Hartley told police that he used both hands to shake the boy during a video game session prior to leaving for work, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Black Male Is Shot For Sport By Reality TV Cops.

Deputies in Broward County, Fla., are coming under fire from a man who says he was shot multiple times by police while he was napping in a car.

The deputies have a different take on the March 8 incident. They say they feared for their lives because Brandon Johnson, 21, of Pompano Beach, Fla., drove his borrowed Toyota Echo at them, WPTV reported.
A complaint affidavit about the incident states that Detective Ron Miller and Detective Andrea Penoyer Tianga, a cast member on the TLC reality TV show "Police Women of Broward County," were patrolling Pompano Beach in an unmarked Chevrolet Tahoe when they observed a "suspicious vehicle" backed into a parking space.

According to the affidavit, the two deputies observed "a black male in the driver's seat" "attempting to duck down in an effort not to be seen." Miller reportedly pulled the SUV in front of Johnson's car "to initiate a stop" and turned on police lights. The detectives, in tactical gear as part of a Metro Broward Drug Task Force sweep, approached from the driver's side of Johnson's car.

The deputies said they fired after the vehicle accelerated in an aggressive manner toward them. Although Penoyer Tianga was struck in the leg by the Toyota and knocked into a parked vehicle, she did not sustain serious injuries, according to agency spokeswoman Dani Moschella.

Community Watch Captaian Lived By Southern Justice Laws, Kill Any Black Male On Sight.

A volunteer community watch captain who shot an unarmed Florida teenager to death last month had been the subject of complaints by neighbors in his gated community for aggressive tactics, a homeowner said.

George Zimmerman has not been charged in the Feb. 26 shooting of Trayvon Martin, 17, who was walking home from a convenience store in Sanford, Fla., near Orlando. Zimmerman, who patrolled the Retreat at Twin Lakes development in his own car, had been called aggressive in earlier complaints to the local police and the homeowner's association, according to a homeowner who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

At an emergency homeowner’s association meeting on March 1, “one man was escorted out because he openly expressed his frustration because he had previously contacted the Sanford Police Department about Zimmerman approaching him and even coming to his home,” the resident wrote in an email to HuffPost. “It was also made known that there had been several complaints about George Zimmerman and his tactics" in his neighborhood watch captain role.

$220 Nike Shoes Cause Foot Locker To Call Out Police

Concerns about disturbances among large crowds waiting to buy special-edition Nike shoes tied to this weekend’s NBA All-Star Game prompted stores in several states to cancel the releases, media reports say.

Of particular interest among many would-be shoppers, according to the reports, was the $220 Nike Foamposite One Galaxy, a space-themed, glow-in-the dark shoe that nods to the space legacy of Florida, where this weekend’s game is happening in Orlando.

In Orlando on Thursday night, a Foot Locker House of Hoops store at Florida Mall cancelled a special 11 p.m. opening after police were called to handle a crowd of about 1,200 people, CNN affiliates Bay News 9 and WFTV reported.

The crowd outside the mall was moved across the street before the late-night opening. But at one point, people rushed toward the store, which was to sell the Foamposite One and other All-Star-related releases, the affiliates reported.

Bill Gives Parents The Right To Fire Teaches, Teachers To Grade Parents.

Two bills in the Florida legislature would give parents overarching power to demand sweeping changes at low-performing schools.

Under the first parent trigger proposal -- House Bill 1191, or the Parent Empowerment Act -- parents would have the power to fire school staff. A majority of parents could also petition to have the principal replaced or have a charter school operator take over the school.

The second proposal, HB 543, or the Parental Involvement and Accountability in the Public Schools Bill, would conversely require elementary school teachers to grade parents on their involvement -- on issues like communication and student rates of absence and tardiness.

Man Kills Man, Than Eats Him.

A Connecticut murder suspect was arrested Tuesday night in Florida after allegedly killing a man with an axe and eating portions of the victim.

According to police in Bridgeport, Conn., 35-year-old Tyree Lincoln Smith was arrested in Lynn Haven, Fla., on a murder warrant issued by the Constitution State. The suspect was taken into custody without incident by local law enforcement and the U.S. Marshal Violent Crime Fugitive Task Force, police said.

The murder suspect, whose last known address is in Bridgeport, was being sought for the murder of 43-year-old Angel "Tun Tun" Gonzalez. The victim's decomposed body was discovered on a mattress inside an abandoned apartment building on Jan. 20. The medical examiner's office determined Gonzalez died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head.
