Slavery In America, The Need For Money Has Us All.

LeRoy Smith thought he had hit rock bottom when he found himself trolling Atlanta's gay district, looking to exchange sex acts for a hot hit off a crack pipe. Then he wound up on a Florida farm near the small town of Hastings, being bilked blind, he says, by a man with a fifth-grade education, sweating all day for a few dirty dollars, with no way to escape from the middle-of-nowhere camp.
He did not think slavery existed in modern America. He knows better now.
The recruiters had found LeRoy Smith playing chess in a park in Jacksonville on May 1, 2010. They pegged him for a black man with a back strong enough for farm work and an addiction strong enough to stick around and work for nothing. He was hooked on crack, but he had enough sense to recognize peonage when he saw it, and to slip away by night to safety.
And now he's talking. He filed a lawsuit last month in federal court against the man he says enslaved him. And he's talking to the Tampa Bay Times in hopes that publicity will cleanse Florida of indentured servitude.
The man he accuses says it's all a lie. Confronted with the allegations, Ronald Uzzle dismissed them and told a reporter to get off his property.
There's something going on in this small town and it might be hard to care because the victims are often homeless black men who live mostly in the shadows. Many have criminal records and sins in their past.
But many served in the armed forces and lived good lives before they dropped out of society and wound up in bondage.
Authorities have failed to stop a form of slavery that begins with indebtedness and sometimes doesn't end until a worker is dead.
And it continues today.

Chili's Server Stole Credit Card Number With Scanner In Apron.

A Chili's server has been arrested for stealing credit card information from patrons dining on baby back ribs.
After complaints from customers about false charges on their credit cards in the last three months, loss prevention at a Coral Springs Chili's traced the activity to one of their waitresses, Germithe Geffrard, 23, of Pompano Beach.
When Coral Springs police arrived to investigate, officers found an illegal credit card scanner in Geffrard's work apron.
After charging customers' cards for their bill, Geffrard would scan the card through her scanner to store the information, according to a police release. Geffrard scanned at least three or more credits every day.
Police arrested Geffrard and charged her with possession of a scanning device.

Woman Beats Up Boyfriend For Watching Too Much Porn.

A Hobe Sound man's expensive taste for small screen adult entertainment led to a violent domestic dispute, Martin County Sheriff's officers report.
When Robin Caccavale Bottieri, 51, called the cable company to find out why her cable had been shut off, she learned of an outstanding charge of $400 for "pornography shows," according to the arrest affidavit.
On April 23, she confronted her live-in boyfriend, who confessed to ordering the hundreds of dollars worth of porn. In response, Bottieri spit on him and he returned by shoving her on the couch.
The physical fight escalated, police say, Bottieri ripping off the boyfriend's shirt in the tussle.
When Bottieri called 911, the boyfriend left the residence but was later found.
Because Bottieri made contact with her boyfriend against his will, she was arrested and charged with domestic battery.
Pornography, both online and on TV, is a constant source of domestic strife -- particularly in Florida and the neighboring states.

Black Father Fights To Keep His Son From Becoming A Statistic.

When a Miami-area middle school student came home with unacceptable grades, his father sent him to the streets.

Seventh grader Michael Bell, Jr. stood on busy North Kendall Drive sporting a sandwich board sign telling passersby that he is failing three classes -- civics, language arts and math, he told Local10.
"Hey, I want to be a class clown. Is it wrong?" read the front of the sign, while the back read, "I'm in the 7th grade and got 3 F's. Blow your horn if there's something wrong with that."

Michael Bell, Sr. stood out on the road, too, telling WSVN the punishment was the last way he knew how to try to reach his son: "If I don't do nothing, he's gonna be a statistic. And I don't want him to be a statistic."

GOP Lawmaker Caught Sexting

The Florida state representative who admitted Wednesday to sending harassing text messages to a married assistant U.S. attorney has resigned from legislative office and returned home to Miami Beach from Tallahassee, as first reported by the Miami Herald.

"The events of the past week have been difficult for my family, for me and for everyone involved," said 39-year-old Richard L. Steinberg (D-Miami Beach) in a statement. "After much consultation with my family, my friends and my colleagues in the Democratic caucus -- and after some time for quiet, personal reflection -- I have decided to resign, effective today, from my position as a member of Florida's House of Representatives."
